Early Life and Education
Dr. Zakir Hussain grew up in a family that deeply valued education and cultural heritage. He was the second of seven siblings. After completing his early education in Etawah, he went on to study at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), where he excelled academically. His brilliance earned him a scholarship to the University of Berlin in Germany, where he completed a doctorate in Economics. Champion of Education
Dr. Zakir Hussain’s passion for learning led him to co-found Jamia Millia Islamia in 1920. This institution aimed to provide modern, inclusive education while preserving India’s rich cultural heritage. As its Vice-Chancellor, he worked tirelessly to raise its standards and make education accessible to more people. Jamia Millia Islamia became a symbol of resistance against British rule and a leader in progressive education under his guidance.
Dr. Hussain believed in combining traditional and modern knowledge systems. He stressed the importance of vocational training, moral education, and self-reliance for students, aligning with Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas of Nai Talim (basic education).

Dr. Zakir Hussain’s dedication to social progress naturally led him into politics. In 1957, he became the Governor of Bihar, where his fair and effective administration earned widespread admiration. Later, he served as India’s Vice President from 1962 to 1967, further cementing his reputation as a wise and humble leader.
In 1967, he made history by becoming the first Muslim President of India. His presidency stood out for his commitment to secularism, democracy, and the upliftment of marginalized communities. Dr. Hussain often spoke about the importance of unity in diversity and celebrated India’s rich cultural and religious traditions.
